My week: Justin Cartwright
To make my day complete The Song Before It Is Sung received a wonderful accolade in the Boston Globe. Whatever they may say about not reading reviews, all writers crave some affirmation that somebody, somewhere, appreciates them. The following day, I was on Radio 4's Today programme trying to explain why novelists get better with age while mathematicians are washed up at 40. I had planned some interesting observations about the nature of truth, the empirical versus the deductive et cetera, but it didn't quite come out as I had hoped. I left White City a little despondent and headed for Bar Italia for the consolations of the best coffee in Soho. My son - the dinner jacket arsonist - rang to say he had heard me and I was very good. He is a fearless critic, so I was cheered.
Monday wild card
The way it is being staged does not fit for CdA. We agreed completely with the critique written earlier in the SR by Jim Kershner. DFO: My daughter, who knows the star, Steve Booth, enjoyed the play. My wife wanted to walk out. And I was in the middle. It was quirky. Sometimes coarse (occasional language, orgy scene). And it had no memorable music. Coming on the heels of "Chorus Line," which was coarser, I'd say the Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre had one adult-themed play too many this summer. I want to see "Chorus Line" again. But I'll pass on "Pippin" (although Ellen Travolta was dyne-oh!-mite in the one scene as Pippin's grandma). .
Assault at HRC Store
Sgt. Brett Parson, head of the Washington Metropolitan Police Department's special liaison units, including the Gay and Lesbian Liaison Unit (GLLU), and the Human Rights Campaign have confirmed a report that the HRC Corner Store and Action Center at 1633 Connecticut Ave. NW was robbed around 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 18. An unnamed 23-year-old male working in the store was assaulted during the robbery, which netted approximately $400. Parson says the victim was pistol-whipped, suffering cuts and bruises to head, for which he was treated and released. Parson described the suspect as a black male in his mid 20s to early 30s, about 5'4'', 135 pounds, with a light complexion, clean-shaven, with minor acne scars on his chin. At the time of the robbery, the assailant was wearing a dark-green knit hat; a long, puffy black coat; black dress pants; and a tie.
