Ghosts, legends, defunct companies
Welcome, readers, to our first ever Halloween-flavored installment of Ask the Readers. Once again, I'm turning to you for hard-to-find answers to questions I've received. Some are pretty routine -- apple shopping, dish washing, pie baking -- but some are downright weird! We've got a ghost, a violet ray machine, a spooky house and a Monkey Man. If you, or your fellow readers, can answer these questions we'll be in for a spooky column next week, just in time for Halloween. (See the end of the column for details about sending in your answers.) Q: Does anyone know anything about the possible haunting of Valentine House, halfway between Rocky Mount and Ferrum? There was only a pile of bricks there where the house used to stand when I was a kid in the '60s.

I was dubious about Obama for along time, mainly because of his relative youth and inexperience. However, the more I read about him the more I like was he stands for, and the more I see him the more I think he could be an inspiring world leader. While I'm here, why is it that he is consistently referred to as black when he is mixed race? .
MacBook Air: delivery, unboxing photos [u]
I played with one today and I just am not impressed. Hmmm, let me say I am very impressed by how thin it its....wow!!! BUT...I had hoped for a real replacement for my 12" powerbook. While this thing is thin, it is too wide and too "sharp" on the edges. Nice computer, but I had hoped for an intel 12" (or smaller) system or tablet system. I have fallen in love with the tiny 10" systems I was exposed to in Japan...some with 8 - 12 hours of light usage, or 6+ with heavy usage. No reason to replace the 12" powerbook yet. In a scathing report on 11 deaths last year at the District's St. Elizabeths Hospital for the mentally ill, an advocacy group for the disabled told city officials yesterday that medical neglect resulted in "needless pain and suffering" for most of the patients "and may well have contributed to deaths from treatable conditions." .
Aspen Music Fest 101
A front-row seat to watch violinist Gil Shaham perform Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D major, opus 61, with David Zinman conducting the chamber symphony - the final piece on that evening's program - was there for the taking for anyone willing to plunk down a 10 spot.
Reasoning I'd catch the evening performance later, I headed to adjacent Harris Concert Hall for a 10 a.m. Piano Master Class led by instructor Ann Schein. It was $22 - the most money I spent all day.
I had no idea what to expect, but I was handed a program as I descended into the auditorium - three pieces by Franz Liszt and contemporary work by Ligeti that I planned to hate, but didn't.
The plethora of master classes and student recitals over a nine-week festival season are, I gather, a chance to catch the rising stars of the classical world in their "I remember when" moments - akin to seeing the Beatles at the Cavern Club in Liverpool in 1961.
