Small Plates offers eclectic choice of nibbles
When I was in college in a small Midwestern town, I had a friend, now a chef, who cohosted frequent dinner parties with his roommate. We would pile into their sparsely decorated, wood-floor apartment, and they would serve our ragtag bunch bowls of bicolor soup with drizzles on top and carefully constructed towers of ingredients that often, but not always, tasted good together. Handwritten menus offered choices to circle with the Sharpie making its way around the table, and the wine always flowed. I hadn't thought of those gatherings in years, until I ate at Small Plates in Harvard Square. Then I remembered the bare-bones romance of them, the sense of experimentation and possibility, and the well-intentioned stumbles, born of ambition. A meal at Small Plates is reminiscent of a dinner party in the university-town apartment of someone who is cooking to please you.

I tried to reassure him that no problem could be that bad, and that I would help him if he told me what the problem actually was. But my first efforts were to no avail. I was certain that he was still a high risk for suicide, and required seclusion and almost continuous staff observation. The next day I renewed my nonstop questioning. Finally he sat up and pointed to a one inch square bandage on his right cheek. "What is it?" I asked. He blurted out, "It's the scar!" It was the scar that was ruining his life. It was too hideous for anyone to see, but it was there, hidden under the bandage, disfiguring, disgusting, making him unfit to be alive. He explained that other doctors who had seen it had said nothing could be done, that he should learn to live with it. But he couldn't live with it.

In fact any doctor has an obligation to ensure a patient, once under their care, does not harm themselves or others. They have no choice but to breech the client patient priviledge and alert the authorities. As I said before it generally does little good if the addict does not want to quit. In the end, it is good to see another meth dealer off the streets. It is good to see this young woman survive to tell her tale. It is sad to see her try to pawn the responsibility of her actions on someone else. This means that her and her family are not truely on the road to recovery. They are in denial. This means she will be spreading half truths to those who would engage her to speak because she had never faced the truth of her actions herself.
