Nip and tuck

Plastic surgery is now becoming more accepted in Malaysia. What do you need to look out for?

By Dr ALICE PREMITHA MICHAEL

FIFTY years ago, you had to do it in secret the subject was considered taboo. Eventually, the rich and the famous took the lead and elected cosmetic surgery as somewhat of a prerequisite to all the glory.

Today, seated at a nook in Delicious, youll hear bits and pieces about whos had their latest rendezvous with their own not-so-hunky version of Dr Troy for a little nip and tuck.

While there are no current figures released by our Health Ministry to depict how many cosmetic surgery fanatics are in your neighbourhood, the mushrooming of many institutions and centres that offer such services speak volumes. The trend has been building up a storm in recent years.

Royals: Kauffman Stadium renovation is on time, budget

The Kansas City Royals said the $250 million renovation of Kauffman Stadium is on time and on budget.

About 90 percent of the renovation project will be completed by the 2009 home opener, with the remainder completed by the 2009 All-Star break, the Royals said in a release late Friday.

Bob Rice, Royals vice president of ball park operations and development, said in the release that the cost of the stadium overhaul will be very close to the $250 million budget.

"We're extremely close and pleased the way things have been going," Rice said in the release. "I think the biggest thing this year is flexibility. Opening Day will possess a whole lot of challenges."

Rice said five major projects are scheduled for completion before the 2008 home opener on April 8.

Guard Greene making big difference for UMBC

In two games four days apart last week, UMBC's Jay Greene made a statement that is certain to reverberate across the America East Conference.

The diminutive point guard took decidedly different paths to two conference victories and came up huge each time. He took only three shots and scored just six points in a four-point win over Albany on Wednesday. On Saturday, when leading scorer Brian Hodges was sidelined by injury, Greene scored a career-high 26 points in a two-point decision at Vermont.

NEC FlexLoad: Downgrade easily from Vista to XP

Although Windows Vista has proven decidedly more popular than Windows XP, despite the negative feedback Vista has received from many quarters, there are many businesses that simply still need XP. In preparation for XP's discontinuation in July 2008, OEMs are preparing to offer those potential customers alternatives to the upcoming limitation of only being able to the purchase XP in 50+ quantities.

NEC Computers has introduced NEC Flexload, a software solution aimed at IT administrators that allows them to downgrade rapidly and easily from Microsoft Windows Vista Business (the only edition that NEC supports the downgrade for) to Microsoft Windows XP Professional. The company explains that many networks are still running on XP; as long as they can remain within the law, NEC Computers is not about to lose potential customers.
