Bottum: McCain and the Hoyas

I'd missed it earlier in the week, but over at Salon on Tuesday, Mike Madden noted that after the Georgetown-West Virginia game on January 26, John McCain called Mark Salter, his "longtime speechwriter/Senate chief of staff/intellectual alter ego," to describe the goaltend (er, block, I mean; yes, block) by which Patrick Ewing Jr. had won the game.

"A Georgetown alum," Madden notes, "Salter has season tickets in the front row at the Verizon Center; about the only thing that gets him more fired up than Mitt Romney is Big East basketball. (At the bar after the Super Bowl Sunday night, he cursed at the TV when the Boston Fox affiliate compared the Giants' win to Villanova's 1985 NCAA tournament upset win over Georgetown)."

Seems pretty newsworthy to me, but Madden pushes it into the mystical territory of the true Georgetown fanatic where my daughter and I dwell when he adds: "The Hoyas have been a near-perfect predictor of McCain's fortunes this year.

Wal-Mart expands in-store health clinics with own brand

Edwards said putting Wal-Mart's name on the clinics also fits with the retailer's drive for a public role in health care to counter union-led criticism that it skimps on employee health insurance.

Wal-Mart has introduced the clinics as well as $4 prescriptions for some generic medicines, and Chief Executive Lee Scott pledged last month to find other ways to help cut health care costs, including promoting the use of electronic health records instead of paper files. .

Yzerman named Canada's GM for Worlds

After a gold medal-winning performance at the IIHF World Championship last year, Hockey Canada is bringing Steve Yzerman back for another successful run on home ice.

Yzerman was named Team Canada's general manager for the second straight year on Monday in Halifax, the co-hosting city for the tournament. Joining him on the management team are former Dallas Star general manager Doug Armstrong and former NHLer Luc Robitaille.

"Working with Hockey Canada and their staff for the world championship last year was a terrific experience, and I am very pleased to be given the opportunity to return," Yzerman said in a statement on Monday.

"Over the coming months, myself, Doug and Luc will be looking to name a coaching staff and players that will give Canada the best chance to defend their gold medal in Quebec City in May."

Camping it up on a culinary Kiwi tour

Our three-hour meet-and-eat walk shows us the relaxed and aspirational side of the city, where young Kiwi guys and girls mooch about over their 'flat white' - espresso with steamed milk - and butchers dispense tips on how to hang lamb until it's curling off the bone. At an indoor market, we're introduced to the indigenous fruit and veg: the kumara, a sort of sweet potato; bright red yams that look like witchety grubs; and golden kiwi fruit, sweeter and softer than their sharp green cousins.

'I remember going to Britain in 1988,' says Cathy, 'and thinking I didn't want to come back, because in New Zealand we had no cafes, no delis, no good food.' The most adventurous cooking came from overseas: restaurants were invariably French or Chinese. Now Wellington boasts four fine-dining restaurants that could hold their own in any metropolis.
