Dermatologists Can Offer Top Tips To Help Keep Lips In Tip Top Shape

While winter's harsh, windy weather is often to blame for dry, cracked lips, sometimes the cause of lip irritation is harder to pinpoint. In fact, several types of foods, cosmetic products, medications or even bad habits have been linked to dry lips. The key is determining the source of the irritation and modifying your daily regimen to eliminate the problem.

Speaking at the 66th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, dermatologist Margaret E. Parsons, MD, FAAD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California at Davis, discussed the most common causes of lip irritation, available treatments and preventative measures to keep lips healthy.

"When I treat a patient for dry lips, the first thing I try to determine is what this patient might be doing or not doing that could be contributing to the problem," said Dr.

Conservative Gary Bauer endorses McCain

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Republican John McCain challenged the notion he is struggling to rally conservative critics as he picked up the endorsement Monday of evangelical leader Gary Bauer.

"We're doing fine. We're doing fine," McCain told reporters in Annapolis, dismissing the notion that losses in two states on Saturday had hurt his campaign.

McCain lost in Kansas and Louisiana on Saturday to former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, although he won narrowly in Washington state. The Arizona senator is all but assured his party nod after rolling up huge numbers of delegates, 719, to the national convention. Huckabee has 234.

MICK MCCABE: Record free-throw streak ends at 102

After his first miss, a time-out was called, and Redford went to the bench while the North Branch public address announcer hailed the record.

"People started applauding and my teammates gave me a hug; they knew I was a little disappointed," he said. "But I had to get my head back in the game right away and go out there and knock the second one down."

The neat thing about Redford's streak is that he wasn't overwhelmed by the feat. He never dreaded going to the free-throw line -- he actually looked forward to each free throw.

"Honestly, I think it helped me focus a little more," he said. "I didn't really feel pressure. Once you're up there, you just let it go. I tried not to think about it too much. Everybody else made a big deal about it.

"I think 102 is a pretty good number.

Ike Turner died of cocaine overdose

But last month, Mia Turner told the North County Times that the idea that her late father had drugs in his home at the time of his death was "an out and out" lie.The news that cocaine played a role in Ike Turner's death was surprising and disappointing to band mates who had performed with him in recent years."I really thought that was something he was finally able to put past him," saxophone player Leo Dombecki said. "I'm sure that will go down as another strike against the guy."Bass player Kevin Cooper also said he thought Turner had long ago put his illicit drug use behind him."It sucks, that's for sure," Cooper said. "What could have driven any man into doing that, especially at that age? It just seems unreal, completely unimaginable."Cooper was the music director on Turner's 2006 album "Rising with the Blues," that won a Grammy last year.
